The English behind Marc-Antoine Dequoy

If Marc-Antoine Dequoy was worried about the reaction from English-speaking Alouettes fans, he can be.

Moments after winning the Gray Cup, the Quebecer spoke out against the CFL’s English-only coverage and specific network media coverage. “You know what, keep your English!” he said under the influence of emotion.

The method is not as scientific as Léger’s, but thirty English-speaking supporters polled about Dequoy’s remarks during the parade all supported him.

“I agree 100% with what he said. The truth is that the rest of Canada lacked respect for French speakers,” said Mary Steinberg.

Stephane Ioffredi waved the sign: “DEQUES FOR THE “MAYOR””.

“He spoke with his emotions and I can recognize myself in him. (…) I liked that when getting off the plane, he returned to his remarks more calmly, but stood his ground. What he said is true,” said the young man who grew up in the West Island.

Filled with a wave of love

Dequoy is used to being one of the most popular players on his team. However, his “popularity” skyrocketed after the Gray Cup and his famous interview. He received hundreds of congratulations. It was actually quite special to see Quebec flags flying high as he spoke to the crowd.

“We’re proud of who we are and where we come from,” Dequoy said. Quebecers are proud of their local team, which is made up of guys from home, but also guys like Cody Fajardo and other Americans who care about our culture.

Fajardo, the Alouettes guard, was one of the football players who applauded the most. The Gray Cup game MVP feels like he’s been adopted by the Montrealers.

“My family and I have received nothing but love since I signed here in February. I feel like I am fully part of this community. I’m really happy to be able to put the Gray Cup back where it belongs.”
