QMJHL: Caleb Desnoyers is top 10 NHL prospect in 2025, according to Craig Button

Our colleague and TSN Director of Recruiting, Craig Button, has revealed his early ranking of the top 10 prospects in the 2025 NHL Draft, placing Quebec’s Caleb Desnoyers at number nine.

Desnoyers was selected first overall in the last QMJHL auction by the Moncton Wildcats. In 15 games this season in Pomorje, the 16-year-old attacker has collected 15 points so far.

“He’s smart with the puck, but he’s just as smart without the puck,” Button said. I think his attacking contribution is good. He’s grown and I think he’s reached another point in being comfortable with his size and everything that comes with it. But he is a competitive and hungry player.

Desnoyers won a gold medal with Team Canada White at the last U17 World Championship.

At the top of Button’s ranking is the American James Hagens from the United States Development Program (USNTDP). Hagens has recorded 28 points in 15 games with the USNTDP, which ranks him second on the team behind Cole Eiserman – who is a potential No. 1 pick in the upcoming NHL Draft.

On the international side, Hagens is already well decorated with a gold medal at the U17 World Cup for the United States in 2022. During the tournament, he scored eight goals and scored 21 points in seven games. He also won the gold medal with players under the age of 18.

“He is an elite player who rushes into the attack. You’re looking at a player who can create scoring chances and can spot his teammates. His vision and his skills are also strengths. He’s an underrated scorer,” Button said of Hagens.
