It’s no secret that the Edmonton Oilers are struggling to find a good number one goaltender.
Although Stuart Skinner seems to have a bright future, it is a bit too early to tell in his case.
Edmonton had hoped to fix this problem in the summer of 2022.
During the free agent period, the Oilers signed veteran goaltender Jack Campbell to a 5-year, $5 million annual contract.
Campbell had a good time with the Toronto Maple Leafs, which seemed to justify a $25 million contract.
Unfortunately for Edmonton, the goalie has been more of a nuisance with terrible stats from last season.
This season is even worse.
In 5 games, the American allowed an average of 4.50 goals per game, with an efficiency rating of .873.
Those performances led to him being waived, eventually ending up in the American League after being ignored by the other 31 NHL teams.
Campbell thought he played well, though, and is surprised he was demoted to the AHL.

When you’re allowing an average of 4.50 goals per game, you can’t really think you’re playing well.
Obviously it’s normal for the passes to be hollow, it happens to all the best players and goalkeepers.
But we mustn’t forget that the other 31 teams passed when they could look for a goalkeeper “for nothing” with his salary of $5 million a year.
Well, it is certain that his contract outweighed him a lot when he was on waivers.
The fact remains that he just wasn’t good enough to stay in the NHL.
And let’s just say that he’s not helping himself much now that he’s in juvenile detention.

He doesn’t risk being called up to the NHL if he allows such a weak goal…
The Oilers did not have the desired start to the season, with a poor record of 2-9-1, and even lost to the San Jose Sharks (2-11-1) last Thursday.
There had to be a change, and there were a lot of difficulties in goal, so Campbell was demoted to the AHL.
This will therefore give more starts to Stuart Skinner, who could become the team’s future number one goalkeeper.
