I don’t know about you, but I personally love the 3 on 3 overtime format. It brings a good dose of spectacle, the best offensive players have room to let their talent shine and the action is constant.
I guess it’s nicer to love overtime when you have the master of it, Cole Caufield, in your favorite team’s jersey.
However, even if the format is really interesting, there are still some problems. We see boys too often turn keep possession of the puck and wear down the opposing team, but it also has the effect of slowing down the pace of the game.
And obviously, the league wants to fix this problem. During the GMs meeting in Toronto, they talked about some ideas to try to add a little more spice to the 3-on-3. The idea of guys not being able to get back behind the red line was brought up, but specifically the shot timer that gets the attention.

In fact, the concept would seem familiar shut the clock which we can currently see in the NBA: once in possession of the puck, a team would have a certain number of seconds to attempt a shot, otherwise they would lose possession.
I imagine there would be a faceoff if the clock ran out, because we can’t just return the disc to the other team like we can return the ball to the other team in basketball.
It is clear that there will be some details that need to be worked out, but I admit that I am not completely against the idea. I still think the red line idea is best for preserving the essence of the sport, but imagine the tension if, with one or two seconds left on the clock, a maverick like Caufield found himself in possession of the puck and had to shoot.
In any case, that would bring some “build-up” and a real sense of urgency.
And as for the red line idea, it might also be good to put a blue line as a boundary. With or without a timer, because it is also possible to combine two ideas.
In short, we’ll see if the idea takes off, but across the league we really want to find a way to improve the 3-on-3 spectacle, which is already far from bad. This will therefore continue.
