New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole won the American Cy-Young trophy for the first time in his career.
Major baseball revealed the results of voting for the honor on Wednesday night, and voters unanimously chose the representative of the Bronx Bombers.
In 2023, the 33-year-old Gunner maintained a 15-4 record and a 2.63 ERA. He also had 222 strikeouts in 209 innings on the mound.
“This is a well-deserved award for Gerrit and I couldn’t be happier for him,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said in a statement.
“I am happy to lead such a talented and motivated player. “It was a privilege to have the opportunity to witness Gerrit’s dedication to his craft, the game and his team.”
Cole is the first Yankees player to win the Cy-Young since Roger Clemens in 2001. Pitchers Sonny Gray (Minnesota Twins) and Kevin Gausman (Toronto Blue Jays) finished second and third, respectively, in the voting.

Snell for the second time
In the Nationals, it is Blake Snell who receives this prestigious honor for the second time in his career, the first time he played for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2018. This season with the San Diego Padres, who is currently a free agent, he posted a 2.25 ERA and hit most players with 234. He also led the league in hits allowed per nine innings with 5, 8.
“It means that the work that I’m doing is paying off, that it’s working and that I have to keep going,” said Snell, whose comments were reported by mlb.com.
The 30-year-old left-hander also became the seventh player in history to win the trophy in both leagues after Max Scherzer, Pedro Martinez and Clemens.
With this title, Snell ends a 16-year streak for the Padres, who have not seen one of their pitchers win this title.
Zac Gallen (Arizona Diamondbacks) and Logan Webb (San Francisco Giants) were the other two finalists at the National.
