Stephen Eustaquio scored in the 85th minute and Canada beat Jamaica 2-1 in Saturday’s CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal match.
Jonathan David scored the second goal for Canada, who had not won in Jamaica in 35 years.
Shamar Nicholson equalized for Jamaica in the 56th minute.
Richie Laryea set the stage for the crucial goal, showing his speed down the right flank before passing to Eustaquia in the box. The Ontarian did not miss his chance.
The second game of the series will be played on Tuesday at BMO Field in Toronto.
The winners will advance to the CONCACAF Nations League finals next March.
The winning nation will also receive a ticket to the Copa America as a guest, at the South American Championship.
The Canadians’ last victory in Jamaica dates back to April 5, 1988, a 4-0 win.
In the last meeting between them, in March 2022, Canada beat Jamaica 4-0 in Toronto to qualify for the World Cup.
In addition, Canada Soccer reported that more than 35,000 tickets have been sold for the Dec. 5 women’s game against Australia in Vancouver.
This will be Christina Sinclair’s last match in international competition.
